Very Reverend Bernard G. Kirlin, V.F.
Father Bernard G. Kirlin was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on May 1st, 1945,
the 7th child of Paul Michael Kirlin and Sara Evalena Ankrom. He
attended grade school at St. John the Evangelist and then went on to
High School and College at the Pontifical College Josephinum in
Worthington, Ohio.
The Josephinum is the only pontifical
seminary outside of Italy and is affiliated with the Propagation of the
Faith College in Rome. It was thus that Father Kirlin came to Miami in
1967 after having earned his B.A. in philosophy at the same seminary.
Father Kirlin attended St. Vincent de Paul Seminary in Boynton Beach
from 1967 to 1971. There he earned two masters' degrees in theology. He
was ordained for the Archdiocese of Miami in 1971 at his home parish in
Pittsburgh.
Over his 38 years of priesthood, Father
Kirlin has held a variety of assignments. He was first stationed at St.
Mary's Cathedral in Miami. He then served in two assignments in migrant
parishes - as associate pastor at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Immokalee and
as Pastor of San Isidro in Pompano Beach.
Archbishop Carroll then sent him to Rome
to study philosophy. While pursuing his doctoral studies at the
Angelicum, he was assigned as faculty member of the Pontifical North
American College for a term of 3 years.
In 1983, Father Kirlin returned to Miami
where Archbishop McCarthy named him as Vice-Rector, then
Rector-President of St. John Vianney College Seminary.
In 1987, he served as Pastor of St.
Peter's Church in Big Pine Key, and in 1988 moved on to become Pastor of
Holy Family Parish in North Miami. In 1997 he took a sabbatical year -
studying both in Pittsburgh at Duquesne University and in Rome at both
the Gregorian and Angelicum Universities.
In 1998, Father Kirlin returned to parish
work as associate at St. Richard's Parish until Archbishop Favalora
named him Pastor of St. Augustine's and as Catholic Chaplain to the
University of Miami on June 8, 1999.
Father Kirlin has served in many
ecclesial capacities and civic boards in his 38 years as a priest - as
Vicar Forane of the North East Dade Deanery, as Chairman of the Marriage
Preparation Board of the Archdiocese, Archbishop's Designate to the
Board of Barry University, and member of the Presbyteral Council, and as a member of the Committee on Priestly Life
and Formation. In October of 2002, Archbishop Favalora named him Vicar
Forane of the West Dade Deanery.
He enjoys music, theater, sports, and
almost anything Italian!
